THE INSTALLATION was conceived as an entire scenographic wall occupied by a single projection made up of three mapped projectors. Several animations were created with the sixteen hundred names collected by the museum that made up a narrative written and narrated by Pedro Bial. The entire ambiance of the exhibition room was adapted according to our concepts and art direction.
"WHAT DOES YOUR LAST NAME REPRESENT TO YOU?"
This question was the starting point of the 2019 institutional campaign, developed by the Immigration Museum.
The action sought to create a point of connection between the history of the immigrant hostel and the thousands of people who, today, do not recognize themselves as represented in the large wooden panel of the long-term exhibition, which pays homage to some families who passed through here .
As a way of updating and giving continuity to this very affectionate place in the Museum, we carried out a two-month period of fundraising – through a WhatsApp contact – spellings and audio of public surnames. In total, we received over 1600 family names, from different origins, from people who came in the past and those who arrived recently.
In this process, the action raised some questions surrounding a surname, in particular, what this word means to the individual and its impact on the construction of a social collective. Through this tribute, we seek to give representation and protagonism to these names, and we also offer sensitive and reflective content about the legacy of immigration over time in the history of their descendants.
And for you, what does your name represent?
